Because of the growing pressure on him, Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol formed a national unity government, Menachem Begin became Minister without Portfolio, Moshe Dayan became Minister of Defense. Haim Bar-Lev was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff. The appointment of Moshe Dayan – the Chief of Staff in 1956 – was a morale boost for the IDF and to the Israeli people in general, however losing the Minister of Defense position was a political defeat for Eshkol. As prime minister he held this position, as David Ben Gurion did the same before.
